Angie Thomas, Taj hejt u glavi, Zagreb, Fokus, 2019.

Kako onda ipak dolazimo do bilo kakve idile?

Kako? Ne znam. Kada? Tek to ne znam. Zašto? Zato što će se uvijek netko boriti. Ljudi se bude, viču i prosvjeduju. I zahtijevaju. Ne zaboravljaju. Mislim da je to najvažnije.”

I am not surprised that I don’t agree with the majority of people. Nonetheless, I expected it. The Hate You Give won as Goodreads’ Best of the Best book by 68 489 votes by readers/people who rated it.

After reading this book, I have only one conclusion, the readers gave the award to what was currently socially important and not to what was of literary importance.

This is an interesting story, seen from the view of a teenager, but that is about it. All the characters are stereotypes, very flat and unconvincing and the whole tragic ordeal ends with a happy end.

Is it possible to have a happy end after all the wrongful murders, protests, riots, racism, unjustice and vandalism that we have seen? I would say – impossible.

A perfect family, integrity and courage managed to conquer all? And all up to the end the point of this novel seemed like it was completely different, vile things happen, but we have to stand up for ourselves and fight. It didn’t seem fighting meant winning as well. How can anything here be idyllical? I don’t know.

This book shows us scociety and what it’s like today, nothing more than this. If a subject is important, it doesn’t automatically mean the book is good, unfortunately not at all.
